the Israelis found a way to cause over a thousand pagers to blow up at the same time.

And the first counts said eight were dead, over 2,700 injured.

These paging devices that Israel, that Hezbollah soldiers and operatives used.

They'd gotten a new shipment, and they were carrying them, either holding them in their hands, in their pockets, strapped to their waist.

Well, they all blew up at the same time.

And it's been shocking the carnage.

Let's talk now to Shannon Kingston, the ABC News State Department correspondent.

I'm good.

And you are exactly right.

It does sound like a plotline from an action movie, but it is real life.

Do we know how the Israelis pulled this off? How did they get all the pagers to blow up at the same time?

Well, U.S. officials are working to gather information and get to the bottom of this. Now, Israel still hasn't publicly taking credit for the blast,

but U.S. intelligence sources tell ABC News that the Israeli government has been working for years

to pull off an attack just like this by infiltrating a supply chain and that this could all be a play

to force the country's enemies to use means of communication that are easier to intercept, to hack.

But there's still a lot of open questions, like how they were able to cause those explosions.

A leading theory is that they could have put a powder, an explosive powder, into the pages that

went off when the devices were heated up, but still it's unclear
