I've been doing a new analysis of the voting in the European elections, and I've worked

out that if you take the Brexit party vote in Wales and you add it to women who voted

green in the south of England and you take away the number you first thought of and add

the number of dogs who were taken to polling stations, you can prove, well, pretty much

anything. Usually, what you end up proving when you do those sorts of calculations is that

the voters really agreed with you. Could we just pause and all agree, the an election

in which only a third of us took part, and which involves sending people to an institution

who may be only there for a matter of weeks really doesn't prove all that much. That, of

course, doesn't mean that what happened this week doesn't matter for politics. It

matters hugely, and here's why. The next date is the 31st of October. That will become

as big a day in people's minds as March the 29th. All I can say is this, if we don't leave,

then you can expect to see the Brexit party's success last night continue into the next

general election. If the fact that Nigel Farrells wants to go on, taking his Brexit party

into contests for Westminster could reshape politics for many years to come. The most

important thing about the European election results is the impact they have on the big

two parties, on Labour as well as the Conservatives, the pressure they put for a change of style,

a change of policy, a change of approach. Its most immediate impact will be on the Tory
