Summary

The confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson filled the airwaves this week, but there were plenty of other Supreme Court goings on. Zack and GianCarlo give an overview of the hearings and then discuss this week's opinions. The Court decided cases involving racial gerrymandering, free speech, and a fascinating issue of religious liberty and the death penalty. Zack then interviews Supreme Court litigator and former acting Solicitor General Jeff Wall. Lastly, GianCarlo quizzes Zack with trivia about the two (and, perhaps, soon to be three) Justices Jackson.

As mentioned in last week's episode, we'd greatly appreciate if you filled out a short survey to let us know how we can improve the show!

Last Friday evening, Justice Clarence Thomas was admitted to the hospital with flu-like symptoms.

He remained hospitalized and missed this week's arguments. Obviously, we wish Justice Thomas well,

and we're praying for his speedy recovery. We absolutely are. Now, in Judge Katanji Brown-Jackson

confirmation news, those hearings are now over, and we will briefly summarize them. But first,

Zach, give us a high-level picture. How do you think things look right now for Judge Jackson's

1:01.1

chances at confirmation? Well, unless something unexpected happens, she's going to be confirmed. It's

1:06.6

simple math. I do think, though, that the hearing has appropriately focused on her judicial

philosophy and her record as a judge. I was very happy to see Republican senators not return

to the hostility that Democratic senators, unfortunately, have routinely shown to Republican

appointees, or Republican nominees. Still, Judge Jackson faced justifiably tough questions.

1:29.9

So how do you think she did in answering those, G.C.?

1:32.5

Well, a couple things struck me.

1:34.3

The first is how good Judge Jackson is at the speaking filibuster.
