Tonight we'll be reading from the island of Dr. Moreau, an

1896 classic early science fiction novel by author H.G. Wells. The novel is the earliest

depiction of the science fiction motif uplift in which a more advanced race

intervenes in the evolution of an animal species to bring the

latter to a higher level of intelligence. In this story a shipwrecked man is

rescued by a passing boat who is left on the island home of Dr.

Moreau, a mad scientist who creates human-like hybrid beings from animals.

This remains one of Well's best-known books. Let's get cozy. Close your eyes. Relax your body into the softness of your bed.

Callow. The long boat, with seven of the crew, was picked up 18 days after by H.M. Gunboat Myrtle.

And the story of their terrible pervations has become quite as well known as the far more horrible Medusa case.

But I have to add to the published story of the Lady Vane, another, possibly as horrible and far stranger.

It has hitherto been supposed that the four men who were in the dinghy perished, but this is incorrect.
