Who recognizes this man?

Anyone, does anyone recognize this gentleman?

Jim Henson, right? Yeah, he's one of my creative heroes, fun fact.

My son's- my son, back, his middle name is Henson, after this fellow.

Now, if I asked you to describe what it is that Jim Henson is known for, what would you say?

The Muppets, right? Or maybe Sesame Street, and that'd be fair.

He's easily most remembered for the lasting impact of those things, and they're wonderful.

But my favorite Jim Henson work is easily a film called The Dark Crystal.

Oh, wow, okay, there's Dark Crystal fans, and they're applause for The Dark Crystal.

That's never happened.

I've done this bit before.

One time at my church, a fan said, I put that image up there, and someone went, is that real?

Well, you know, it is.

So The Dark Crystal was, and still is, the only live action feature film ever created entirely

with sophisticated creature puppetry.

And it's dark, it's scary, it's humorless, very strange.

And Jim Henson wanted it to be even weirder.

The first cuts of the movie featured almost all of the dialogue and an alien language

designed by the filmmakers with no subtitles.

When The Dark Crystal was finally released in 1982 with English at this point,

audiences did not like it.
