0:15.7	The Republican Party was created in 1854.

0:22.1	adopted at the party's first national convention in 1856,
0:27.3	promised to the feet, quote,
0:29.4	those twin relics of barbarism, polygamy and slavery.
0:34.3	Those twin relics were spreading into the Western territories,
0:38.9	Republicans feared that as those territories became states,
0:43.7	polygamy and slavery might become permanent parts of American life.
0:48.7	Polygamy, the merger, one man to multiple women,
0:52.6	devalued women, and made them a kind of property.
0:56.8	Slavery, of course, did the same to blacks, literally.
1:00.7	The Democrats were so opposed to the Republicans
1:03.4	and their anti-slavery stands that in 1860,
1:06.7	just six weeks after the election of the first Republican president Abraham Lincoln,
1:11.8	South Carolina, a state dominated by Democrats,
1:15.1	voted to succeed from the Union.
