When I played trumpet, I played in a college big band and also was in some combos where I played out at gigs and restaurants and clubs

and things like that. And at that point, in my music education, I had almost no music theory whatsoever. So I was just purely playing

solos by ear, and people seemed to like it. I was even a part of the Montreal Jazz Festival.

So when I switched more recently, the last three years or so, to a wind synthesizer, I had

to use saxophone fingering.

And so I'm not quite there yet as far as playing by ear.

But in the meantime, I've been learning a lot of theory and all kinds of things.
