Summary

A woman is dead in Minneapolis after an encounter with ICE.  Esau McCaulley, Justin Giboney, Malcolm Foley, and producer Mike sort through what we know so far, what the law actually says about deadly force and compliance, and how Christians should think about state power and the value of a human life. The conversation wrestles with fear, responsibility, split second decisions, and the narratives forming around the shooting long before the facts are settled.

Hello, everyone, welcome to the Eastall McCauley podcast.

0:09.1

This is actually an emergency episode that I think is going to come out on Friday morning.

0:14.0

We released an episode on Thursday, but I think that many of you have known about some

0:19.2

of the events that's happened in Minneapolis, where Renee Good lost her life because of an interaction with an ICE officer.

0:26.8

And so we had a couple of people who we wanted to help help us talk through this or think through this as believers.

0:32.9

And we have some of our regular people here.

0:36.4

We have Malcolm Foley.

0:37.4

Thank you for coming on the podcast, Malcolm. Happy to be here. And we have Justin Gibney. What's going on, guys? I think you all know, Justin Gibney is the president of the campaign. Malcolm Foley, the professional suitwear on the podcast. But he also works for Baylor. What do you do for Baylor? I'm special advisor to the president for campus engagement.

Let's hope that you have that job by the end of this episode. And we have also with us,

1:02.3

our co-host producer, Mike. Thank you for coming. Hey, I saw it good to be here. And you were actually

1:06.3

at your house and you left your house to come back to work today. You put out the bat signal and I came right down.

1:11.6

Yeah.

1:12.6

So I think that by this point, if you listen to this podcast, you know at least about what happened in Minneapolis.

1:18.6

I'm going to see if I can talk right today.

1:20.6

What I want to be able to do is to put into some kind of context what's going on with ICE,

1:26.6

what they are allowed to do and what they

1:28.3

aren't allowed to do, and to look at what the Department of Justice and even some of our

1:32.3

recent court cases have said about the proper rules of engagement as relates to law enforcement

1:38.0

and people in moving vehicles. First of all, and forgive me, so this isn't going to be the

1:41.7

explosive part of the podcast, but I think it's important for us to be at least quasi-responsible. And it's also important

1:46.9

for us to know we're going on the best information that we have at recording. There might be

1:51.4

some details to come out that we didn't know about it recording. If so, have mercy, have grace.
