The house looked too new to be haunted.

That was what she remembered thinking years later, because at 12 years old, she still believed haunted houses were supposed to look a certain way.

They were supposed to be old Victorians with warped porches, narrow staircases, dead gardens and windows that seemed to watch the street.

They were not supposed to sit in half-finished subdivisions with fresh sod, clean sidewalks,

and construction dust still clinging to the curbs. This house was new enough that parts of the

neighborhood still smelled like lumber and wet dirt. There were orange survey flags and empty lots,

plastic sheeting over unfinished windows, and the constant daytime sound of

nail guns echoing from houses that had not yet become anyone's home. Her mother loved it immediately.

It had a big kitchen, tall ceilings, a finished basement, and more bedrooms than they had ever had

before. After years of moving from one rental to another,

always chasing something better, it looked like the kind of house that meant a family had finally

arrived somewhere. But the first time she stepped inside, she wanted to leave. Nothing happened,

no door slammed, no voice whispered her name, no shadow moved at the end of the hallway. It was worse than

that in some ways, because there was nothing clear to explain why her body reacted the way it did.

The air inside the house felt dense and electric, as though a storm had built inside the walls,

but never broken. The farther she walked from

the front door, the more pressure seemed to gather behind her eyes. In the master bathroom, she

stopped beside the empty tub and stared down at a dead beetle lying on its back near the drain,

and that was all, just a dead insect in a brand new house. But as she looked at it,
