Michael did not grow up believing in ghosts, if anything.

He grew up learning how to live around things that never quite made sense

the way most children do when the adults in their lives don't have explanations either.

There was no moment where someone sat him down and said the house was haunted, no warnings,

no rules about what not to talk about. There were just sounds that didn't belong to anything.

Michael was seven years old the first time something happened that everyone in the room

noticed at the same time.

He remembers it clearly because of how ordinary the evening had been before it wasn't.

He and his younger brother were sitting at a small table.

Their mother had bought for homework,

pencils scattered, notebooks open.

Their mother was in the living room with them, close enough to glance over their work,

far enough away to let them feel independent.

It was around eight at night, late enough for the apartment to feel quiet, early enough,

that no one was tired yet.

The sound came from the kitchen, and it was loud and sudden, the unmistakable clatter of metal

hitting tile, forks, spoons, several of them falling at once.
