Welcome back to Kern Affairs, our shorter length show about stories of love gone fatally wrong that are in the news right now.

Today we start with an update on a story that we covered pretty recently,

the tragic death of Ugandan Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptagai.

As you may recall, Cheptagai was killed in a horrific attack at her home in Western Kenya

just weeks after competing in the Paris Olympics. Last week we learned that the man

accused of her murder has also died from burn injuries sustained during the attack.

Dixon Marengeesh, the alleged perpetrator, passed away at the same hospital where

Cheptaget was treated. Reports indicate that Dixon had poured gasoline on Rebecca

and set her on fire, resulting in burns to 75 to 80% of her body.

He himself suffered burns to 30% of his body

during the incident that he caused.

The motive behind this brutal attack appears to be a land dispute.

Rebecca had built a house on a piece of land in Kenya's rift valley were many elite runners

train.

Her family claims they had previously reported Dixon to authorities

for harassment but no action was taken. This tragic event has sparked outrage and

reignited discussions about violence against female athletes and women in

general in Kenya. In recent years at least three other female runners have

been murdered in Kenya with their deaths blamed on husbands or

boyfriends. Local advocacy groups point out

that financial disputes often lie at the heart of these crimes.
