Summary

This is Episode 4 of The Hopeful Locals (Episode 7 if you’re a paying subscriber and get bonus episodes!).

You’re getting this episode ad-free because the people in it deserve not to be interrupted by ads, I feel. If you agree with that and would like to support my work, you can join us at 'STORIES by Lea Thau' on Patreon and Substack, where you’ll find all my new work and the entire Strangers archive.

Big thanks this week to Art Lawson and Wilma Wagon of the Wind River Fish & Game and Jason Baldes of the Tribal Buffalo Initiative, as well as Paul Huberty and Erika Warren-Yarber, who run The Wind River Development Fund and The Wind River Sage Fund, where you can track the progress of their Recompete grant projects and support their work.

I also want to thank the Just Transition Fund for introducing me to Erika. They’re the only philanthropic initiative focused on coal community transition in the U.S., working to create economic opportunities for the frontline workers and communities hardest hit by the transition away from coal.

Huge thanks to my Associate Producer, Vix Jensen, to Paul Dreux Smith for making the music and mixing, to our resident artist and illustrator Pernille Clifforth, to my project editor, Christina Thyssen, to our production intern Jen Alevizos, and a special thanks this week to Heather Kitching for her help.

Hi, everybody. I've made a kind of radical decision, which is not to run ads on this story,

0:06.3

and hopefully the next one. The people in these episodes live with generations of inherited trauma,

0:12.8

and they're trying to create something beautiful and hopeful and community-driven and collaborative

0:18.3

and healing, and the spirit of their work could not be more

0:23.4

counter to the ugliest aspects of late-stage capitalism that were surrounded by right now.

0:30.0

And for me, sandwiching these stories in between ads just felt wrong.

0:36.1

When I launched this series, I actually thought about doing the whole thing without

0:39.5

ads and just asking those of you who could to become paying subscribers on Patreon or Substack,

0:44.4

but wise people advised me against it. You'll look too rich if you forego ads, said one friend,

0:52.1

and another one said, you know, the endless tin cupping is kind of annoying too.

0:57.7

And I thought those were good points.

0:59.4

But the same number of ad impressions that would have made me about $5,000 in the old ad market

1:06.3

is currently making me $500 or $600 about a tenth of what it was, which means I have to

1:13.0

deal the tin cupping regardless.

1:15.2

And a third friend of mine said, you know, you're also taking away an incentive for

1:22.9

people to become paying subscribers if they're already getting the stories without ads,

1:27.4

without paying. And I thought,

1:29.6

yeah, she's right. But in the spirit of the episodes I'm about to share, I'm choosing to think that

1:36.4

we aren't always so transactional in our motivation to support something. So if you'd like to

1:43.3

support my work because you like it and you can,

1:47.1

then I'd be so grateful. And yes, you'll also get a bunch of stuff. If you want to be transactional,

1:52.7

you'll get 80 episodes that are only available there and you'll get invitations to a lot of fun
