Summary

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is one of those herbs that a lot of people are aware of, especially in regards to its usage as a remedy for sleep. But why does Valerian help us sleep? What are the underlying properties that lend to this popularized usage? And what else can Valerian be used for?

In this episode, Sajah explains the holistic properties of Valerian as a nervine hypnotic and potent antispasmodic remedy, with applications reaching beyond just insomnia. You'll learn about some of the quirks of Valerian, especially in regards to its sometimes paradoxical reactions in some where it stimulates instead of sedates! This points towards some important considerations about when you don't want to use this plant, based on its unique energetic constitution as compared to many other nervine hypnotics.

Hey there everybody, Sagea Popham here, founder of the School of Evolutionary Herbalism. 0:42.3

I want to share with you a little bit about how we want to approach using Valerian within the context of holistic herbal medicine.

0:52.3

So one of the distinct things about Valerian

0:55.0

is that it has a notably acrid flavor.

0:59.0

And this taste within Valerian

1:02.0

is highly indicative of its primary medicinal properties,

1:06.0

which really the taste of any plant oftentimes indicates

1:10.0

not only some of the organ systems or

1:13.0

actions that it'll have on the body, but it can actually also indicate some of its pharmacological

1:18.7

constituents as well. And one of the things with Valerian is that it has that classic, distinct,

1:26.6

super aromatic smell to it. A lot of herbalists tend to define it as

1:31.9

that, quote, dirty sock smell. I don't know, my socks never quite smell as bad as Valerian,

1:37.5

but for the most part, that aromatic property that we see with Valerian is due to the presence of volatile oils.

1:47.0

And those volatile oils are primarily in the form of sesquiterpine lactones, valerionic acid,

1:55.0

and it also contains erudoid glycosides and a certain class of eryroid's called valapotriots.

2:01.6

And those valipotriots are the primary compounds that are responsible for the medicinal effect of Valerian.

2:07.6

But those ultimately translate into this acrid taste.

2:11.6

And that acrid taste is really similar to this sensation like bile in the back of your throat.

2:19.2

Not exactly a pleasant taste, but what this flavor typically indicates in a medicinal plant

2:26.2

is an antispasmodic property, meaning that it's going to help to relax tension and constriction
