we're going to be looking at some more Masters of War. So this will be part two in our series about Masters of War and in this

So this time we're going to be looking at four particular characters

that are very important in that story.

Firstly, going into the 4th century B.C.

the Greek world was very much dominated

by the Spartans following all the drama the 5th century

BC all of the Peloponnesian wars etc the Spartans were really the top dogs of Greek lands during that period.

That was until a character called Epaminondas came onto the scene.

He was a Theban, he was from Thebes.

Eppamanondus was an innovative military tactician who successfully challenged Spartan dominance and he was celebrated by classical world historians

who lived in the aftermath of his own lifetime. Although we don't remember much about him today, he's not

talked about as much today. So let's go back into the archives of the History of the World Podcast and pluck out some of the things that we have

It is difficult to know whether Eppamondas was in any way involved in the Corinthian War.

We don't know much about his early life, but we can feel confident that he was born

into the Theban aristocracy. If he wasn't involved in the Corinthian War, then it may have been that he was just too young,

but we do know that it was likely to be around the end of the Corinthian War that Epaminondas was coming of age.

Sources tell us that Epaminondas was trained from a young age for combat with clear intention of being an important part of the Theba military.
