Today on the show, you know, when you work for an NPR show, you get a lot of questions about the news.

I like that.

And most of the time, I tell people we're trying to figure out how to make sense of what's going on in the world right alongside you.

But it gets a little awkward when the story is about NPR. And lately, a lot of people have asked me what's going to happen to public radio, now that Congress has cut more than a billion dollars from the corporation for public broadcasting.

That question is definitively above my pay grade.

But it did get me and others on our staff wondering,

what does the history of public media tell us about this moment?

NPR and PBS have faced funding challenges pretty much since their inception in the early

1970s, and the media industry has bigger problems

than Republicans targeting the corporation for public broadcasting. But the story of NPR is a story
