A common response or criticism of the black community has been the Italians worked their way up with no special favors.

Why do you guys need affirmative action? Right. African Americans had a ready

counter. And that counter is, well, the Italians weren't discriminated against the way we were.

We had slavery for hundreds of years plus Jim Crow for another 75. You can't compare us to those groups.

The Jews present a somewhat unique problem for that argument.

Why? Because the oppression and mistreatment of Jews historically is so well documented

that it's not as easy to mobilize that counter convincingly, especially after the Holocaust.
