Summary

On March 31, 1922, an entire family and their maid were murdered in their home, an isolated farmstead in Bavaria, Germany, known as Hinterkaifeck. The killer has never been discovered, and a web of mystery has been woven around the incident since it occurred. In this episode we discuss the case, the suspects, and try to separate fact from fiction.

1:39.5	because they remain a mystery. The Hinter-Kifek murders are one of these unsolved mysteries that to this day
1:47.3	haunt the morbidly curious. The murder of an entire family and their maid in 1922 Bavaria
1:55.0	shocked all of Germany at the time and still shocks us today, not just because of the brutal nature of the crime,
2:02.6	but because the killer has never been revealed. This incident is encased in a mythology that
2:08.7	has been spun around it since it occurred. There are many details that have been added in hindsight
2:14.2	by witnesses that may or may not have played a part, may or may not have
2:18.5	happened at the time of the murders, and may or may not be true at all. Like many past murders,
2:25.2	because there is no way to prove any theory wrong, hundreds have been put forth, each
2:30.1	pointing to pieces of evidence, sometimes single pieces of evidence, to claim validity.
2:35.9	It's for this reason, and the fact that most of the well-researched books on the case are in
2:40.8	German and not English, that I'll be summarizing the case instead of going into greater detail.
