The Reverend Jim Wallis is long-time strong advocate for peace and justice. He is also an American theologian, writer, teacher and political activist. | 0:00.0 | Hello, good friends, good to see you, and welcome back to the Bill Press Pod. |
| 0:09.4 | You know, I look forward to every one of our podcast together, but I've been especially looking forward to this one, |
| 0:16.6 | because it's all about one public policy issue that I've always been fascinated by, |
| 0:21.9 | and that is, what's the proper relationship between church and state? |
| 0:27.9 | It's a question, of course, that our founding fathers never resolved, |
| 0:32.1 | and it's a question we've been struggling with ever since. |
| 0:35.1 | Are we a secular nation that welcomes people of all faiths, or no |
| 0:40.2 | faith at all? Or are we a Christian nation that merely tolerates while looking down upon non-Christians? |
| 0:48.2 | And those issues have perhaps never been more critical than they are today with the emergence |
| 0:53.0 | of white evangelicals as a powerful |
| 0:56.2 | driving force in the Republican Party. They advocate what's called white Christian nationalism, |
| 1:04.6 | and they preach that our founding fathers were all white Christians, who founded a white Christian nation, that white Christians |
| 1:13.8 | are the only true Americans, that the Bible, not the Constitution is our founding document, |
| 1:20.6 | and that there is no wall of separation between church and state. And they are dead, wrong about everything. But there's still |
| 1:31.4 | a major political force supporting candidates, Republican candidates who buy their extreme views |
| 1:38.9 | of religion. I believe it's a false, distorted, and dangerous political movement. |
| 1:45.8 | And today's guest, the Reverend Jim Wallace, head of the Center on Faith and Justice at Georgetown University, |
| 1:52.5 | calls white Christian nationalism a danger to our democracy. |
| 1:57.5 | Jim Wallace, good to reconnect with you. |
| 1:59.8 | And thank you so much for joining us here on |
| 2:03.0 | the Bill Press Pod. As we say in my tradition, Bill, it's a blessing to be back with you. |
| 2:08.5 | Well, thank you. So, Jim, a couple of weeks ago, online, I attended a program that you |
