It was the first advertisement in the property section of the Derby Daily Telegraph dated Thursday, May 14, 1992.

In bold print, Bury and Chiltern Chartered Surveyers headed the black and white picture of Lowe's cottage in Upper Mayfield, Staffordshire.

The text detailed a remarkable opportunity. A unique one-off property ripe for modernisation,

offering adaptable accommodation in a pretty hamlet five minutes from Ashbourne Town Centre. The home

included a sitting room, a second reception

room, a kitchen, a bathroom, a half-seller workshop, two bedrooms, a large landing

suitable for conversion to a third bedroom, a rear garden, a former stable block, a coal store and a garden shed all for the price of 69,950 pounds.

However, nowhere in the listing was their mention of the ghosts who were said to live there.

Bury and Chiltern chartered surveyors expanded their search for a buyer to other regional newspapers.

Snippets appeared as far afield as the Northamptonshire evening telegraph,

this time further down the list without a photograph and with the enticing text of substantially

reduced, and it had been. The price was lowered to 57,000 pounds. By the time Andrew and Josie Smith purchased the property,

it was an absolute steel at just 44,000 pounds.

But was their new home a blessing or a curse?

Lowe's cottage seemed like the perfect place for the couple to raise their three children,

and self-employed Joyner Andrew was eager to renovate the old building himself

and make it a home using the workshops on the property.
