I'm Lauren Orton, and this is one strange thing, the show where we searched the nation's news archives for stories that can't quite be explained.

You know, strangers, there's something particularly satisfying about a ghost story that, well, just refuses to stay dead.

There are no shortage of local legends attached to local mansas and historic buildings and crumbling cemeteries, and, yes, dolls, and even furniture.

We've really covered a lot of ground on this podcast, haven't we? But a really good story,

it is one that can survive, not just for years, or for decades, but for centuries. So on that note, strangers,

have you ever heard of Maul Dyer? Maybe if you're from Maryland, the name might ring a bell.

Or if you're especially well-versed in the origin of horror movies. Perhaps you know what's about to unfold.

But trust us, even if you haven't run into Mal Dyer's story before, it's exactly the kind

of tale that we're talking about. Really, it's more than just a ghost story. For the discerning

disciple of the weird and unexplained, there's just

about everything happening at once. It's got accusations of witchcraft, a brutal winter death,

a cursed rock, and centuries of reported hauntings. Oh, and it may just have inspired one of the

most successful independent horror movies of all time.

But we're getting ahead of ourselves. So, let's start with the basics. According to the New York

Times, Maul Dyer was said to have lived in colonial era St. Mary's County, Maryland, sometime in the

late 1600s. Now a few sources date the story to the 1790s, but that
