Summary

Australia is home to one of the oldest and creepiest "possessed" toys out there: Letta the Doll (Letta-Me-Out), a doll that was found under a purportedly haunted home and, according to its new owners, has been engaging in hijinks ever since. Apologies for the pronunciation of Wagga Wagga; we checked this in a professional documentary produced on Letta and one news clip but a kind Australian let us know that it was inaccurate. We always do our best to check each and every place! One Strange Thing: True Paranormal Mysteries explores the archives of the unexplained, blending rigorous historical research with a wry, skeptical wit to investigate true supernatural stories and baffling mysteries that made headlines. Dive into our Episode Mystery Archive β€” a curated, topic-organized source for documented hauntings, UFO sightings, cryptids, folklore, and bizarre true mysteries. I'm Lauren Norton, and this is one strange thing,

0:08.0

the show where we search the nation's news archives for stories that can't quite be explained.

0:18.0

Strangers, we have to be honest.

0:25.1

We have not had good luck with dolls.

0:28.6

At least, not on this program.

0:31.2

Call them figurines or toys or marionettes.

0:34.4

Whatever.

0:35.4

It has not gone well.

0:37.4

And while it's well established that we hear

0:39.7

at one strange thing are neither default believers nor hardened skeptics, we really are willing to

0:45.3

take our weirdness on a case-by-case basis. Our experiences in the possessed toy genre

0:51.8

have left us feeling a little, well, skittish about further coverage.

0:58.2

Perhaps we should explain.

1:00.4

You may remember our episode, The Toy, which told the story of Robert.

1:05.6

He's a purportedly haunted doll from Key West, if dolls can be from a place, who was once in the possession of

1:13.3

the wealthy eccentric Robert Gene Otto. Yes, both toy and man were named Robert, but the man

1:20.7

went by Gene. We won't get into that again. Anyway, after much drama, Robert the doll came to rest, in a literal sense, at the 40s Martello Museum.

1:31.3

And per the official website, his supernatural influence has continued.

1:36.3

Quote, once he was put on exhibit, cameras and electronic devices malfunctioned in his presence.

1:42.3

And soon letters began arriving addressed to the doll,

1:46.2

offering apologies for disrespectful behavior or asking forgiveness.

1:51.5

Why letters of apology?
