Okay, today is we dig back into our study in the Gospel of John.

We are looking at John chapter 5 verses 37 through 40.

And I need to set up the context here because the context really matters

on the statements that Jesus is going to say to us today.

Jesus had just healed a man. He had just healed that man on the Sabbath,

which was the religious observance day within the Jewish culture when everyone rested.

Nobody worked and the Pharisees had gone overboard to make a lot of extra rules to make sure nobody worked.

And Jesus through what he told the man who was healed to do in picking up his bed to walk

and into a healing was considered to have broken the Sabbath law through what he did in healing the man.

And so these officials have come and they've started criticizing Jesus and questioning him

and trying to put him on the spot and Jesus is responding to them,

telling him about his authority and who he really is.

When we come to verse number 37, he's going to say some pretty direct and difficult things for these men to receive.

And I want you to put yourself in their shoes if you were a religious leader of that day.

And this upstart preacher who's going around doing things in the name of God
