It takes me back to the early 1980s and my first job after college.

I was the stock boy for a New York art dealer called Wildenstein.

Just about everything about the place felt like a secret, except for how it had started.

At the end of the 19th century, a Jewish street peddler in Paris named Nathan Wildenstein

traded rags for paintings with some oddball artists.

They called themselves the Impressionists.

He did this so well that by the time I got to the Wildensteens,

the family had the most valuable private collection of art in the world.

Huge vaults lined with racks of moneys and renwars and pizarros that

no one had ever seen.
