an Ed Landry novel by author Jack LaFontaine. Chapter 1

The lights at 439 P.A. Street came on earlier than they did anywhere else in Lockett.

Its lone resident, Delma Rousseau, habitually awake before the 330 alarm and on his way to work by

4. This morning was no exception. Running a hand through a salt and pepper hair, Delma shuffled

off to the bathroom. His hair was getting saltier every day. Tiny Crow's feet stamped into the

corner of his eyes were the only sign his face yielded to age. He shivered a little as he splashed

handfuls of cold water on his face, scrubbing it dry on the towel hanging next to the mirror.

That done he flashed a quick smile and returned to his room scratching a place he reserved for

private moments. He pulled a white baker's coat from a row of them hanging in his closet,

slipped his arms through the sleeves and buttoned it over a bright white shirt before pulling

on starched overalls. Then balancing a black cap with a gold flur deli on the front of it

atop his head, he headed for the door. A wire-haired terrier jumped from the bed and chased after him.

Delma stopped in the doorway to scratch behind the little dogs ear.

You be a good boy, Peppy. Delma told the bouncing bundle of energy at his feet. Peppy ignored

him and began to run laps around his master in a playful attempt to keep him home. Delma

carefully stutter stepped around the dog but kept a steady march for the front door.

They were still a few feet from their destination when Peppy frozen his tracks, his eyes locked on
