Welcome to episode 138 of Real Cool History for Kids.

This episode is for Sophie Stevenson, who wanted me to tell you all the story of the Great Depression.

Hey Sophie, this one's for you.

In this episode, we're going to learn about the chain of events

leading up to the Great Depression, what life was like during the Depression,

and what major events actually brought it to an end.

So let's start at the beginning.

In the late 19 teens, the world was just coming out of the Great War.

This was the war that was supposed to end all wars,

but in reality, it would be known as World War I because there was a World War II as we all know.

I told you about World War I back in episode 72, so if you hadn't listened to that one yet, you need to go back and listen to it after today's

episode. It will help you. So World War I was the first war after the world had invented and developed industrialized ways of doing things.

In other words, this was the major war, the first major war after airplanes and other modern inventions were being used.

This war was so terrible that it really scared people in ways no other war had before. As a result, when the war was over, some people

wanted to focus on making the world a better place, and other people, well, they just wanted to have fun

and escape the reality of how scary the world had become.

Well, in the United States, some of the people who wanted to make the world a better place

focused on making alcohol illegal in the country.

They blamed alcohol for a lot of trouble.
