It comes from a hit of stories by

Francois Rabelais about two giants called Gargantua and Pantagrual,

first published in 1532. In these satirical stories,

Gargantua, one of the giants, sets up a monastery of Thelima, and here is how it's described.

In all their rule and strictest tie of their order, there was but this one clause to be observed.

Do what thou wilt.

Thilema means will.

In 1904, a man named Alistair Crowley published what he claims to be divinely

received wisdom as The Book of the Law.

A publication which has become famously well known by shorthand

reference to its similar command. Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.

One work of famous literary satire, the other a holy book of the magical religion of Thelima.

Make of that what thou wilt.

His real name was Alistra Crowley.
