Akeel Reed Amar is a sterling professor of law and political science at Yale University.

His many writings include America's Constitution, a biography, and America's unwritten

Constitution.

His most recent book is entitled The Words That Made Us, America's Constitutional

Conversation, 1760 to 1840. It is, I'll say up front, it is a towering study of the civic

formation of the United States in their first four score, as he says. And that is our topic today.
