As I have conceded before, many believers in Judeo-Christian traditions view their scriptures as symbolic rather than literal.

Mainstream Judaism emphasizes interpretation and a metaphorical understanding of the Hebrew Bible,

just as the largest Christian group, Catholics, asserts that while the Bible was inspired by God,

passages in it are symbolic and allegorical, and not to be understood literally,

especially when doing so contradicts history and science. In fact, according to a recent

Gallup poll, the percentage of Americans who take a purely literalist view of scriptures

has steadily fallen since the 80s. But there is a purpose in focusing on the claims of literalists in critiques of religious thought,

since the number of literalists in America is still high at 20%, since the literalist view causes

so much harm in promoting dogmatism and undermining education and trust in academia, journalism, and science. And since, as I've

argued many times before, the authoritarian emergency America currently finds itself in, is because

of the marriage of fundamentalist evangelical Christianity, which broadly takes the literalist view

with conservative politics since the 80s.

But of course, literalist views of the Bible have a long history of leading people to believe and pursue the wrong things.
