Summary

Annie and Jenny take a gentle stroll through Chapel Yard Cemetery in Inverness and think about the stories that graveyards tell us. They encounter a succourer, a short snake, and a new perspective on the city they love. Hello and welcome to Stories of Scotland.

This week we are continuing with our Halloween journey.

0:15.2

I am your local crypt-dweiler, Jenny.

0:18.3

And I'm your gravestone enthusiast, Annie And in this episode, we're talking about a place

0:24.4

near and dear to my heart. It's the graveyard next door. Well, not quite next door. The graveyard is

0:31.1

my favourite Gaelic poets, Mary Vore, Great Mary of the Songs. And I often bring her flowers,

1:20.1

well, her grave flowers. Well, that's lovely, Annie. We walk by this graveyard almost every day,

1:26.2

and while you are familiar with it and even have a grave to visit, I have never actually taken my wondering feet in.

1:33.2

Whenever I'm passing by, I feel I never quite have the time to pop in and have a look around.

1:38.6

But why, Jenny? It's a lovely little space of green with lots of trees and berries, things that you really like.

1:46.2

I do like trees and berries, but these ones are all hidden behind walls and hedges.

1:51.5

And it's not just that, Annie. It's also because it's right next to the busiest roundabout in the city.

1:56.2

And I always have to like, that gear myself up mentally before crossing it.
