On Wednesday, House Democrats pushed through a sweeping expansion of federal voting rights against total Republican opposition.

It's the latest battle in a raging war about elections aimed at countering GOP attempts to clamp down on

ballot access. H.R. 1, known as the For People Act, would overhaul government ethics and campaign

finance laws and seek to strengthen voting rights by creating automatic voter registration

and expanding access to early in absentee voting.

The vote on the bill comes as Republican-controlled state legislators across the country

have launched their own offensive with some 250 separate measures taking aim at ballot access,

including measures to limit mail-in voting

and impose stricter voter identification requirements.
