It’s November 12th. This day in 2012, the GOP is licking its wounds after an underwhelming election result. It begins a process of self-reflection that would result in the “Growth and Opportunity Report,” a blueprint for a party that turns off fewer voters and embraces diversity.

Jody, Niki, and Kellie revisit the report in the light of the 2022 midterms, and discuss what lessons have been learned — and ignored — from its findings.

This day we look back at 2012 when in the wake of an underwhelming election the

0:15.8

Republican Party took a hard look in the mirror and said,

0:19.1

does America like us? So last Tuesday there was a midterm election in this country, right?

Here in 2022 and like all midterm elections a million storylines and spin have blossomed,

0:30.0

but certainly one of the main ones is that the GOP underperformed

0:34.0

especially given the historical forces of how a party not in power does in these

0:38.4

midterms something that we've talked up before so look we've been wanting to do this

0:42.4

episode for a while and now it feels very

0:44.8

resonant. So this is our time to revisit what came to be known as the GOP Growth and

0:50.8

Opportunity Project report, a playbook for how Republicans could win

0:54.6

elections going forward by being more inclusive and respectful a

0:59.0

playbook of course which Donald Trump casually slid into the paper shredder just a couple years later.

1:05.2

But a very interesting moment nevertheless and I wonder if people are starting to think about that

1:10.2

moment now.

So here to discuss as always are Nicole Hammer of Vanderbilt and

1:14.7

Kelly Carter Jackson of Wellesley. Hello there. Hello dirty. Hey there.

1:20.6

So yeah we've been wanting to do this for a while and then all of a sudden this sort of like news hook or historical resonance comes along

1:27.6

The growth and opportunity project, GOP, ha ha ha ha ha very well done, But I want to actually read a few things that I've seen in the news just in the days since this year's midterm, which obviously like, you know, it is likely the GOP is going to get some power back but

1:43.7

underwhelming I think everyone would say for for the GOP and some of the quotes

1:47.9

you see floating around are like from GOP operative saying stuff like, you know, America told us that they prefer team
