Summary

hey-do-you-remember-podcast-the-giver.jpg

We decided to take a break from our regularly scheduled programming and try something a little different for this episode. Rather than picking a movie or TV show, we thought it might be interesting to re-read Lois Lowry's young-adult novel The Giver.

Carlos and Donna remembered most of the story, but both agree that its final moments come across very differently now. Chris had almost no memory of the book and was impressed with how skillfully Lowry allows the true nature of the narrative to unfold.

Topics include: all the questions raised by considering how this utopian society actually works, how our parents policed what we watched on TV but not what we read, the two ways to view the ending and the evidence that supports each interpretation, subsequent books in the series, our thoughts on the upcoming film adaptation, and much more.

Hey guys, it's Chris with just a couple notes on this episode. Originally, this is going to be another

0:04.9

bonus episode because it was a book and the format is a little different than what we usually do.

0:10.0

After doing it, we all kind of decided it was fine to just release as part of the regular

0:15.0

rotation. Being that it is a little different, though, I would say that if this is your first time listening to the show, you might want to start with another episode, since this is a little atypical of how this usually works.

0:28.2

The other thing is we talk about some of the other sequels to The Giver.

0:35.6

So if you haven't read those and you are planning on it or just don't want

0:39.6

it spoiled, we do get into some of the details of those books. If you want to skip that stuff,

0:45.8

it starts at about 40 minutes. And then actually right after that, Carlos spoils the end of

0:51.3

the Sopranos. So if you don't want that spoiled either, from 40 minutes to 45 minutes, just skip that section and you'll be all good. And what else? Oh, apparently my neighbor's home caught on fire while we were recording. So you'll hear a bunch of fire trucks and everything in the middle of this. They're fine. The house is

1:13.3

fine. I'm not sure what happened there. False alarm. Maybe I'd ask them about it, but they're very,

1:18.7

they're very cold people. Maybe that's what put the fire out. Their icy disposition. I don't know.

1:23.7

So yeah, so there's fire trucks and then a dog's barking.

1:28.0

It's a real amateur hour.

1:29.3

It turns into a real shit show for a couple of minutes there.

1:32.1

Otherwise, I think that's it.

1:34.2

We'll be back in two weeks with a more traditional episode.

1:38.4

I don't know if we've officially revealed what it is yet,

1:41.4

but I will tell you there are Muppets involved, so look forward to that.

1:46.7

And otherwise, enjoy the episode.

1:53.6

Hey, do you remember The Giver? Hello and welcome to Hey Do You Remember, a show where we reminisce about a movie or TV series we grew up with,

2:18.4

then take off the rose-tinted glasses to see how it holds up today.

2:21.9

I'm Chris.
