On December 17, 1968, in a remote stretch of woods in Georgia, a woman named Barbara was told

She was a student at Emory University, and like a lot of other people on campus during an outbreak, she had come down with the Hong Kong flu right in the middle of midterm exam week.

So instead of heading straight home to Coral Gables, Florida, she ended up in a nearby roadway inn with her mother Jane, who had traveled to Atlanta to help Barbara get through it.
