Now without further ado, here is Elizabeth Elliot. I want to talk to you about the gift of the present moment. The gift of the

present moment. I'm sure you can all think back in your life to some stunning moments. I can think of

quite a few since I'm a good bit older than most of you. But I think of one very exciting night

when I was living in the Western jungle of Ecuador. I was a single woman working

with three other single women, two Britishers and one American.

And late at night, amid the usual night sounds of the birds and the tree frogs and the river. We heard the sound of

horses hoofs and a horse galloped into our front yard and a man jumped off and handed me a telegram. And the

telegram was from Jim Elliot, a missionary way over on the other side of the Andes

who had been working there during the same period of time that I had been working in the Western jungle.

And the telegram asked if I would be so kind as to meet him in Quito just as soon as possible.

Well, this was a man that I'd been in love with for five years,

desperately hoping that someday God might make me his wife. But as many of you know if you've read Passion and

Purity, which is the intimate story of our courtship, we were not engaged. We

didn't have any relationship whatsoever to each other.

We were committed to Jesus Christ, but Jim had confessed his love for me before I graduated from Wheaton.

And so here it was five years later.

He was asking me to meet him in Kito and of course I was certainly hoping that there would be a proposal forthcoming and that is exactly what happened.

It was a stunning moment when I received that telegram.
