I want to welcome all of you to this special occasion where we're going to be reflecting from the word of God on the gift of fatherhood, both divine and human.

Of course, the occasion is Father's Day, where our nation celebrates fathers, as we did

earlier this year with Mother's Day. It's a special thing, though, because it's also during

the year of St. Joseph, the first and only time in church history where we've had an entire year consecrated to reflecting upon the grandeur and the greatness of St. Joseph as being not only the father of Jesus, but our father too, the patron of the Universal Church.

And to make this a sort of triple blessing, for me, it's also a special

year because just a few weeks ago I had a chance to celebrate the elevation of one of our five

sons, Jeremiah, to Holy Orders, watching my own son become father Jeremiah.

Not less of a father than I am, but by supernatural and sacramental means, even more.

As a breadwinner, I provided him and the other kids their natural sustenance.

But now, through the power of the Holy Spirit and the laying on of hands by the

bishop, he has become a Eucharistic breadwinner. And one of the first things we did after his

ordination and his first mass, we invited him to the house, and a number of nieces and nephews

lined up to have him hear their confession. And last of all, his father, too. And so to experience this

double grace of reconciliation from my son who's become a supernatural father, how good can it get?

What I'd like to do is to reflect upon why it is so good by looking briefly at Ephesians chapter 3, verse 14. But before I read this,

I also want to reflect personally, because for me, it's been 30 years since the death of my father.

And so way back in 1991, I learned this lesson the hard way, that you've got 10 commandments and you've got that obligation to fulfill them throughout all of your life
