On January 7, 1761, a woman was executed in Dublin for one crime and one

crime only. Yet, as centuries passed, this woman's story took on a whole new life of its own

and created a version of events that, though entertaining, leaves the difference between fact

and fiction more than a little muddled.

cup of murder. Dorkas Kelly, who everyone seemed to call darky, was a madam who operated a relatively

successful brothel in the southwest region of Dublin.

Located near the fish markets, very little is known about Dorcas Kelly's life prior to the

establishment of her business, and all stories written about the woman seemed to have been

penned in the aftermath of her death on January 7, 1761.

Yet she left behind a legacy that would last for centuries to come.

Here is what we know about Dorcas Kelly, some of which is fact and some simply rumor.

On St. Patrick's Day in 1760, Dorkas was convicted of the murder of a shoemaker named John Doling.
