Pastor Erwin shares that a church culture which is focused on sin, or never doing what is wrong, has missed a crucial point of the scriptures. He shares a lesson learned from personal experience that when he focused less on his bad habits and more on doing good, he ran out of time for the wrong things. He explains that doing good is always based on one’s essence and not their performance.

0:48.2	It must have been somewhere around 4th grade where I was introduced in school to situational
0:53.6	ethics and the whole dynamic of having to choose between two unimaginable choices.
1:01.8	Usually it wasn't having two good choices that were pinnored against each other but really
1:06.6	two bad choices, two choices that given other options you would never make, like for instance,
1:13.9	this seems to be one of the classic ones, if you and a group of your friends were suddenly
1:21.2	stranded somewhere, like the Andes, and you couldn't survive because you didn't have
1:28.1	enough food or you didn't have any food, and so you had to come to an ethical choice to
1:33.0	you, choose to eat one of your friends and survive or do you choose to together die of
1:41.8	starvation.
1:44.2	And I remember later as I was growing up, there was a lot of controversy around the
1:50.4	conversations around situational ethics, and especially by the way when I became a person
1:55.4	of faith, I began realizing that for many people of faith the whole idea of situational
2:01.4	ethics seemed untenable, it was just wrong to think that ethics would ever be situational.
