Summary

A note for listeners: I’ve had to be on voice rest this past week so instead I’m bringing you an older episode from our archives! I’ll be back next week with a brand new Outlore Episode!

London, 1993: A man called Colin Ireland made it his New Year’s Resolution to murder as many gay men as possible, and as soon as he began, widespread fear across the capital’s gay community could be felt. He’d stake out at gay bars, waiting and scouting for his next victim…

Then, desperate for fame and notoriety, Colin would call the police on himself, teasing them with his horrific crimes, leading them down a cryptic path of clues.

Hello and welcome to Outlaw Podcast. I'm Eleanor Neal and today we're in London in 1993,

0:07.2

where the city's gay scene was being terrorized by a serial killer known as the Gay Slayer.

0:14.1

Just a little disclaimer before we get any further. I actually lost my voice this week,

0:19.4

so I was unable to record a new episode for you.

0:22.5

So we have dug into the archives of my YouTube channel and pulled out this episode from a couple of years ago.

0:29.0

So if you watched it back then and you're listening again today, first of all, that means the world to me.

0:34.2

Leave a comment and let me know how much of it you remember.

0:36.6

But hopefully for many

0:37.7

of you Outlaw listeners, this can tide you over until next week's episode when I'll be back

0:42.5

with a fresh case for your ears. Before I start the story though, you already know it's super

0:47.3

important for us here at Outlaw to raise awareness for important causes in line with each episode.

0:52.4

So I wanted to talk to you about an amazing

0:54.8

LGBTQ plus charity that actually was at the forefront of helping the gay community in the aftermath

1:00.6

of today's case. They're called Gallup and for decades they have been huge advocates. Gallup was

1:07.7

established in 1982 in response to the abuse and the violence that the gay community were experiencing,

1:13.6

that the police were failing to even help with, let alone stop it.

1:18.6

It was originally Gallup's mission to expose systematic harassment and expose police failings, which they successfully did.

1:25.6

Then, over the years, they have grown and expanded and

1:29.5

today they're still doing amazing work helping LGBTQ plus victims and survivors of abuse and violence

1:37.3

here in the UK. They also have national helplines dedicated to hate crimes, conversion therapy,

1:43.7

rape, sexual abuse. There are so many helpful

1:46.8

resources on their website as well. So of course, the link to that will be in the podcast description,
