Summary
Leading up to our return in September, we are doing summer reruns, which is our way of repurposing episodes that with a little configuring (and retitling) might get more listens than they got back in the day. First up: Mama's Family! And next week, you'll be getting a full-fledged new episode about Saved by the Bell! Enjoy!
"There Is Nothing Like the Dames" (February 17, 1990)
Believe it or not, Mama's Family has a deeply queer history. While the final result of — the syndicated revival that returned to TV after NBC canceled the it — bears little of that, this episode goes over all the ways a recurring sketch on The Carol Burnett Show originally told the story of a queer-coded artist who can't relate to his family back home. It's all the stranger to consider that Mama's Family never did an explicitly queer episode, even with all those Bob Mackie costumes.
Read the article in which Bubba actor Allan Kayser talks about his famously tight jeans.
Vicki Lawrence sings the original, non-instrumental version of the Mama's Family theme song. But also listen to her disco banger "Don't Stop the Music" and the no. 1 murder mystery pop hit "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia."

| 0:00.0 | Hi and hello from summer. It is summer where I'm recording this. It's probably summer where you're listening to this unless you're in this other hemisphere. And it's been summer for a few weeks. This is not news. But I am going to be reinstating something I've done on summers. I'm going to be reinstating something I did with this podcast in summer's previous, where we do summer reruns, which is not just a means of putting something in a feed so we get |
| 0:22.2 | listens on what would otherwise be a quiet period. But also, it's my way of resubmitting |
| 0:28.7 | things to you that maybe didn't get enough attention the first time through. Usually, |
| 0:32.3 | it's my fault, if I'm being honest. In the case of this episode, it's definitely my fault. This is our |
| 0:37.7 | Mama's Family episode. Glenn and I both care about Mama's Family a lot, perhaps more than most |
| 0:41.9 | of our listeners do. And selling people on wanting to hear the history of Mama's Family is maybe |
| 0:47.0 | tough. I don't know. I would hope that you have faith in us to do something interesting with |
| 0:53.0 | even a show you may not necessarily care about. But in this case, there's a lot of really good gay history. And I feel like people did not listen to this episode the first time because I titled it, Mama's Family Never Did a Gay episode, which is technically true. But I guess when I title something X never did a gay episode, people will think like, oh, that I don't have to listen to it. But I like to point out, we still talk about gay stuff. |
| 1:13.1 | Like, just because we're talking about the glaring lack of a gay episode doesn't mean we're just talking about straight people stuff for the entire thing. |
| 1:20.2 | We do talk about gay representation and what it means to not have real gay representation on a popular show. |
| 1:26.0 | And that's the case here. |
| 1:26.8 | But it's especially interesting that Mom and's Family did this in contrast to its gay history |
| 1:33.0 | and the story of Dick Clare and how a gay man helped invent Mama's Family. |
| 1:38.4 | Next week, you're going to be getting a brand new episode. |
| 1:41.5 | So it won't be summer reruns. |
| 1:43.1 | It'll be a brand new episode you've never heard before. It is actually going live this week on Patreon. So if you want to listen one week early, go to patreon.com slash gayest episode ever and subscribe them on the $1 a month level. And that will give you access to all the regular episodes you normally get one week early, including summer episodes. That's a saved By the Bell episode. I'm very excited about it. Otherwise, that Save By the Bell |
| 2:04.5 | episode will be in the feed next week and then following that a different summer rerun, I haven't |
| 2:09.1 | decided, which yet. That's it. Happy summer or, you know, if you live in the other side of the |
| 2:15.7 | world, winter. |
| 2:17.1 | Hi, ladies. Hi, Bubba. What's in the other side of the world, winter. Hi, ladies. |
| 2:18.3 | Hi, Bubba. What's in the box? |
| 2:20.3 | This? It's my costume. |
