Summary

Most books about finances describe 9 to 5 jobs as prisons, as the rat race, as finance freedom's first enemy. But what about meaning? What if someone has a 9 to 5 job that makes them happy and still finds a shortcut right into financial independence while having a little margin and forgets a bit about chasing that dollar to survive?

In this episode, I enjoyed chatting with Dr. John Soforic, chiropractor and author of the bestseller book The Wealthy Gardener: Lessons on Prosperity Between Father and Son. His book was translated into six languages; it hit number 46 worldwide in Audible books, inspiring thousands of people to look at their finances differently.

John knew that if he tried to give his adult son financial advice, the chances of getting heard were low. He decided then to start writing a book in a collaborative effort with his son, debating and asking him to revise every chapter. John's plan worked perfectly. He managed to touch his son and thousands of people worldwide with his words and financial advice.

We talked about his motivation to write the book, the broad financial aspect it covers, and the factors to consider when we choose a career. He shared his thoughts on pursuing our passion, minding our incapacities and what we don't want or like to do, and the kind of livelihood a career offers.

Tune in to Episode 72 of Rejuvenaging, and listen to John's story of sacrifice, planning, commitment, and focus.

To the way that we lead our lives wherever we are in the lifespan. Today's guest is really special. I don't know how many of you have heard about the book, the wealthy gardener. When I first heard about it, I thought, geez, this is somebody who I need to get on the podcast because

1:44.0

probably dovetails a lot with what we do that he's probably going to tell us how to save money and become wealthy by growing our own food.

1:56.6

So it was a bit of a surprise to me to hear that and read that it's something other than that, but something that's very important to all of us as we pursue our own lives with enthusiasm.

2:11.5

And hopefully the next generations lives with enthusiasm. Dr. John Sephora was once a chiropractor and like a lot of people who went through medical and professional schools, he had $200,000 in student debt.

2:31.4

Probably even acquire more debt nowadays in some of the schools. So he retired at age 49 with a retirement income of $240,000 a year. Now that's not saving. That's income, $240,000.

2:50.3

So how do you get from student debt to retirement income of $240,000? He then wrote a book for his son in college and called it the wealthy gardener, lessons on prosperity between father and son.

3:07.2

The book became an Amazon bestseller. It hit number 46 worldwide on audible and has been translated into six languages and influence countless number of people in the area of personal finance.

3:25.1

So it is with great pleasure and a real honor to welcome John Sephora. John is such a pleasure to have you with us. Welcome to rejuvenating with Dr. Ron Kaiser.

3:38.8

Doc, thanks for having me, man. It's a pleasure to be here and it's an honor to be speaking with you. So thank you.

3:44.4

Pleasure is ours and let me start with the title, the wealthy gardener. Now that I've become familiar with it, I see that I had a misperception and I know the title makes perfect sense, but it doesn't make perfect intuitive sense. So let me let me ask you about that.

4:06.5

Oh, God, isn't that funny. So the initial title of the wealthy gardener, you don't even know what the book's about, which tells you something about my ability to make titles, right?

4:15.4

It's funny, Ron, because sometimes I've even seen these people that run my on the reviews. They say, I thought I was buying a gardening book, you know, so a gardener and they go, they get into this book.

4:26.0

They then write this praising review about, oh, my God, personal finance, which the two don't normally intersect, right?

4:33.2

So it's funny how I've been able to snare these gardeners into personal finance for this misnamed and big, he was title that I thought, well, of course people would know what this means.

4:45.8

It tells you how little I do know what's the title really about, you know, the title of the garden has always been a timeless metaphor in life.

4:56.4

And that's what I was after throughout history, we've used the garden as a metaphor for our time on this earth. We sow what we reap.

5:05.3

We reap what we sow. We have a certain amount of time on this earth. And it's what we do with that time that determines the shape of our land.

5:14.2

And so I was always attracted to that metaphor because back through the ages. So I wanted to stick to a garden to represent a more of a metaphor about life.
