Summary

Isaac rambles about what the next evolution of duty pistols could be. His ideas aren't so much based on any individual pistol technologies, but a number of external trends:

  1. Increased use of pistol optics
  2. Increased use of suppressors and muzzle devices
  3. Decreased importance of SMGs and PCCs
  4. Increased sophistication of decentralized manufacturing

After some feedback and testing, this could be an interesting video study.

Samuel, can you say welcome to the podcast?

0:03.5

Welcome to a podcast.

0:06.4

Hello and welcome to another T-Rex talk. My name is Isaac Bodkin. This is a podcast exclusive episode.

0:12.3

And we're going to be talking about the future of the fighting handgun. We're going to talk about rifles or pistols?

0:18.6

Yes. This episode is more speculation and wish lists than it is actual predictions about where the technology of handguns are going.

0:29.9

And again, it's the fighting handgun, duty handgun that we're talking about today, not necessarily pocket pistols and stuff like that, which I actually feel like there's

0:38.3

been more development in the sort of pocket pistol concealed carry area than, than anywhere else

0:44.3

in the firearm industry.

0:45.8

I'm very impressed with the SIGP365, which has managed to pack an awful lot of full

0:51.5

power 9mm bullets into something that used to be, well, it's the same size as old 32 caliber

0:57.5

mouse guns from like 10 or 15 years ago. But apart from minor changes like smaller sizes,

1:04.3

we really are in the same territory, technologically speaking, that firearm's handguns have been in for about 120 years. So the

1:12.7

semi-automatic recoil-operated locking barrel handgun has been around now for about 120 years,

1:19.9

and there haven't been any major, major changes to that core technology. There have been

1:25.3

some new materials. There have been some new ways of going about

1:27.9

other things, but there hasn't been a major shakeup. And I'm not necessarily suggesting that there

1:32.7

should be or will be a major shakeup. And in fact, what I am basing some of my speculations upon is

1:39.3

not technology in the firearm space, but in the accessory space.

1:45.1

And some different trends that we see in the way that different firearms are used, handguns and larger firearms.

1:50.9

So let's look at the first trend that I want to bring up.

1:54.6

That is pistol optics.

1:56.9

So obviously there have been a lot of developments in the optic space, both magnified optics and non-magnified optics.
