In the Jewish world over the last few decades, I think we've had very few people who have led

as consequential a way as Ambassador Dory Gold has.

He's really one of the rare and indispensable leaders of the Jewish people and of the state

of Israel.

And I think what makes him so interesting is he operates

on three different levels.

First, he's really both an intellectual leader

and a political leader.

Intellectually trained at Columbia, PhD,

and international law, Middle Eastern Affairs,

has been the president for many years of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, which is one of the most important think tanks in Israel, and has written books, articles, essays on a huge range of subjects.

All of them are trying to illuminate both the history and the current challenges of the modern

Middle East and of the Jewish people in a deeper way.

I think the second thing that makes him so unique is he is both a clear voice and often

a very tough-minded voice in the defense of the Jewish state, but also a very gifted diplomat.

And it's rare enough to find anyone who's good at either of those things, speaking boldly

with clarity in the face of those who often are Israel's challengers or even enemies, but also

someone who can simultaneously build strategic relationships that can serve the Jewish people and navigate complicated

political waters.

And finally, I think what makes him so rare is he can operate on both a strategic level

and a day-to-day tactical.

He's thought deeply about the big story of Jewish civilization and the big strategic threats
