Memorial Day has come and gone. It is associated with many things.

It's the unofficial start to summer. It's the end of the school year, graduation, a weekend of sporting events, a day off from work for some to spend time with family and friends.

Others do have to work, and it's probably a good thing that we express our appreciation

to those whose jobs require them to sacrifice holidays.

Memorial Day is often associated in some of our minds with fireworks and backyard cookouts and swimming pools and all of that is good.

It's what the people responsible for Memorial Day would have wanted.

They would have wanted us to spend the day celebrating, not spend the day more abundant, sad. They would want us to celebrate.

So we shall. We shall celebrate the men and women who found something bigger than themselves,

who answered the call of a country or the needs of other countries and died in service to America.

At some point, we do need to come back to the fundamental question associated with sacrifice,

which is simply this. Was it worth it? Are we what you envision when you lie dying on a farm battlefield?

Have we become the country you thought we would be when your ship was hit and what was left of your life flashed briefly before your eyes?

Have we proven ourselves worthy of what you lost, what you voluntarily surrender. In a different setting, most of us are
