In the biblical narrative found in 1 Samuel 28, King Saul, facing imminent battle and abandoned by God, sought guidance from a medium, commonly referred to as the witch of Endor.

Desperate, Saul disguised himself and consulted her to summon the dead prophet Samuel for counsel.

Despite initial hesitation, the medium successfully brought forth Samuel's spirit,

startling both herself and Saul.

Samuel, in a prophetic message, foretold Saul's impending defeat in battle and his death.

Stories like this one permeate the annals of human history, from the necromanic

mediumship of the Witch of Endor to the prototypical witch covens of colonial North America,

to the shamanistic practices of tribal witches deep in the jungles of Africa and beyond. But what is
