| 0:00.0 | Who is the foundation of the Christian Church? |
| 0:05.0 | I like to ask that question because it's kind of a misleading one, as I'm trying to fake people out a little bit, because inevitably, when I ask Christians, who is the church's foundation, the immediate reply that the majority of people give to that question is Christ. |
| 0:25.6 | Why do people say that? |
| 0:27.6 | Well, I think the reason is obvious because of the famous hymn. |
| 0:31.6 | The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ, our Lord. |
| 0:35.6 | Now, the primary image of foundation, however, in the New Testament, |
| 0:41.7 | when the building metaphor is used, does not refer specifically to Christ. The New Testament says |
| 0:48.7 | there is no foundation which can be laid except that which is laid in Christ Jesus. But the chief use of the metaphor |
| 0:56.9 | of foundation is attributed to the prophets and the apostles. The New Testament says that it is the |
| 1:04.2 | prophets and the apostles who are the foundation of the church. |
| 1:10.8 | So that the church's foundation does not begin in the New Testament, it is established |
| 1:15.4 | early on in redemptive history, in the Old Testament, the prophets of God, are the foundation |
| 1:21.6 | upon which is built the house, the Old Testament prophets, the New Testament apostles, |
| 1:26.6 | together comprise the foundation. |
| 1:29.3 | When you look at the New Jerusalem that comes down from heaven in the book of Revelation, |
| 1:34.6 | and you hear this magnificent description of streets of gold and of walls that are bedecked |
| 1:38.8 | with all these precious jewels and everything, what's the foundation? |
| 1:42.5 | The foundation is the prophets and the apostles. |
| 1:47.0 | Now, what role does Jesus have in the building metaphor? Again and again, Christ is called |
| 1:54.7 | the cornerstone. He is the one who anchors even the foundation and the whole building is supported in a certain |
| 2:06.4 | sense by that chief cornerstone. |
| 2:14.0 | Thanks for listening to Ultimately with R.C. Sprole. |
