Summary

In 2002, the nation was captivated by the disappearance and murder of Laci Peterson—a young, pregnant, white woman from California. But just months earlier, Evelyn Hernandez, a 24-year-old pregnant immigrant from El Salvador, also went missing under eerily similar circumstances. Her partial remains were later discovered in the same bay, and her 5-year-old son Alex has never been found. Why did one case dominate headlines while the other faded into obscurity?
