Mark William Hoffman was born on December 7, 1954, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and raised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Growing up, Mark was considered a below-average student,

but had many intriguing hobbies like magic, chemistry, stamp, and coin collecting.

He and his friends were even said to have made bombs for fun,

and Mark, according to his own testimony, was able to forge a rare mint mark on a dime

when he was just a teenager. Like many young men in the LDS Church, Mark volunteered to spend two

years as a missionary, and in 1973, was sent to the England Southwest Mission in Bristol.

In calls back to his parents, Mark claimed to have baptized several converts during his mission.

He neglected to tell them that he had perused Fawn M. Brody's biography about Joseph Smith,

the founder of Mormonism and the LDS Church,

and found himself, in addition to purchasing some early Mormon materials, purchasing many pieces that critiqued the lifestyle
