to Florida one summer. I'm not talking Disney World. I mean

muggy, swampy, sweaty Florida. We were on a boat tour of the St. John's River, and I was hot,

miserable, and bored. Until we floated past a chilling sight, the crack remains of a dam. Beyond

it, there was a bay, with the ruins of a coastal

town jutting up from the water. I leaned over the edge of the boat and muttered,

what was that? A girl walked up beside me. She was a few years older, with fiery red hair.
