The College Football landscape is set to undergo a lot of changes in the coming years. Not only will student-athletes be eligible to profit off of their name, image and likeness, the College Football Playoff is also heading towards change with the looming 12-team expansion model likely to go into effect in the next few years. 

On this week’s interview edition of The Flagship Podcast, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby joins the show for an exclusive discussion about the pending changes headed towards college athletics. Bowlsby, who was one of the four members of the Division I working group who came up with the 12-team expanded playoff model, goes in depth on the behind the scenes discussions he and his colleagues had while formulating the new playoff model and what this means for all conferences. 

Bowlsby weighs in on how this change will enhance the regular season schedule, particularly due to the fact that more teams will still be in contention for a College Football Playoff spot late in the season, which is not always the case with the current four-team CFP structure.

Bowlsby talks about how this model will impact independent teams, like Notre Dame, and why the few independent programs may be on the negative side of the decision to expand to the 12-team model.

The Big 12 Commissioner also discusses the new name, image and likeness legislation set to begin in some states starting July 1. Bowlsby gives his opinion on how NIL laws will impact student-athletes and predicts the NCAA will in fact come up with some regulations prior to the July 1 start date after spending the last 20 months hesitating to take initiative on the NIL concept.

In addition to an overall look at the changes headed to college football, Bowlsby weighs in on the Big 12 Conference teams and if the College Football Playoff changes will alter the league’s current regular-season scheduling.
