Summary

In this week’s Friday Five, NLW and Scott break down U.S. Treasury comments that rattled Bitcoin markets and offered a rare glimpse into America’s BTC holdings, then dive deep into Circle’s launch of a layer one blockchain—and why it’s sparking debate about the return of private chain walled gardens. The conversation explores how rate cuts could hit Circle’s revenue, potential ripple effects for Coinbase, and the shifting competition between crypto-native giants and fintech incumbents. Plus, frothy IPOs like Bullish, Ethereum ETF momentum, and what BlackRock’s $100B in crypto assets means for the market. It's a daily podcast on macro, Bitcoin, and the big picture power shifts remaking our world.

What's going on, guys? It is Friday, August 15th, and that means it's time for the Friday 5. Before we get into that, however, if you are enjoying the breakdown, please go subscribe to it, give it a rating, give it a review, or if you want to dive deeper into the conversation, come join us on the Breakers Discord. You can find a link in the show notes or go to bit.ly slash breakdown pod. All right, friends, back with another Friday 5, and today we are talking about, well, a bunch of things, but the big one, I think, is this news that Circle is creating their own L1. By the way, Stripe is also creating their own layer 1, and it's got everyone asking, is this the return of the private chain thesis that so didn't work in the past? Scott and I get into all of that, plus much more,

0:55.4

so without any further ado, let's dive in. We've got a lot of news to cover, as usual here.

1:02.9

Maybe a slightly slower week, but still a crazy news cycle, especially for August.

1:09.3

Here we go. Let's just dive right into it.

1:11.4

We had Bacent Bitcoin drops below $119K after U.S. Treasury Secretary rules out new Bitcoin

1:18.8

buys.

1:19.5

Here is exactly what he said.

1:21.4

We've also started to get into the 21st century of Bitcoin Reserve.

1:24.9

We're not going to be buying that, but we're going to use confiscated

1:28.5

assets and continue to build that up. I mean, that was a questionable remark. He obviously

1:35.8

quickly went ahead and corrected it later, which we can discuss. But he did say, we're going to

1:41.0

stop selling Bitcoin. I believe that the Bitcoin reserve at today's

1:44.1

prices is somewhere between $15 billion and $20 billion. So actually a lot to unpack.

1:49.0

It gave us a bit of confirmation as to how much Bitcoin the Treasury might hold, but also some

1:54.9

wishy-washy thoughts here on what that reserve might look like in the future.

1:59.7

It had the feel of like a parent who has decided to tell their kids one thing, but forgot

2:06.6

exactly what they were going to tell their kids, but was basically like, just stop asking

2:10.6

me about this.

2:11.6

If you listen to the actual interview, it was a total throwaway line.

2:14.9

It wasn't like someone was like, hey, are you going to keep buying it?
